Well, I promised I’d post my third and final mystery song, this one unsolved.
Please help me, I’m desperate.
I’ve been trying to find this song for decades, and I just can’t. The last time I heard it was in a hotel bar in Huntsville, AB in February 1994. It was known to me then, though I didn’t know the title, the name of the band or any of the lyrics.
I haven’t heard the song since, not even once. Yes, I’ve checked Soundhound and other music-recognition engines – bubkas. I’ve also hummed it like an idiot to countless people. A million (wrong) suggestions… and tons of laughter.
So I used MuseScore to re-create what I remembered of it. I’m sure I’ve got the vocal melody right. I got the harmonic progression as best I can remember it for the piano part, the bass was functional guesswork and the drums are a little embarrassing, but they at least capture the tempo and the groove.
Just to give you an idea of what I think I’m hearing, I started my search by combing the the works of Michael Jackson, Debarge, Kool & the Gang, Vanessa Williams, Sade, and from there countless other Motown, R&B and Soul artists. I’m guessing it was recorded sometime between 1985 and 1990, or maybe a year or two outside of that corridor.
